Frequently asked questions

What permissions does Motion Bay need?

Motion Bay uses camera access (live view and dashcam), location services (navigation and points-of-interest discovery), and optionally microphone access (hands-free voice search only; the dashcam is silent). You're prompted to grant these on first launch, and all permissions can be managed in iOS Settings.

Does Motion Bay record video?

Yes. Motion Bay continuously records from both the rear and front cameras in rolling 10-minute segments. Old segments are overwritten automatically, so you always have recent footage without filling storage. Footage stays on your device. You can save individual clips to your Photo Library from Settings using "Save to Photos."

How much storage does Motion Bay use?

Dashcam recording uses roughly 200–400 MB for the rolling segments (two 10-minute files per camera). Drive traces and cached map data are small — typically a few megabytes per drive. You can view cache statistics and configure retention in Settings.

Does Motion Bay work without an internet connection?

Core features — dashcam, compass, speed, altitude, drive timer, and g-force — work fully offline. Points-of-interest discovery and the wind display require a connection; map data is cached for offline use once downloaded. Voice search requires a connection on older devices but works offline where on-device speech recognition is supported.

Does Motion Bay send my data anywhere?

No analytics, no tracking, no cloud storage, no accounts. The only network requests are to Apple MapKit (points-of-interest searches) and Open-Meteo (wind display). Each request includes only your approximate location, with no name, account, or device identifier attached.

What is the wind display?

Motion Bay shows local wind direction and speed, retrieved from the Open-Meteo weather service using your approximate location. It updates as you move and is hidden when current data isn't available.

Why is the app landscape-only?

Motion Bay is designed for a car mount in landscape (home button on the right). This gives the widest camera view and the most natural layout for the instrument displays while driving.

How do I use voice search?

Tap the microphone icon, then say what you're looking for — for example, "gas station" or "coffee shop." Motion Bay searches within 10 miles and shows results on the radar display. Speech recognition runs on-device where your hardware supports it.

How do I set my home location?

Open Settings, then tap the Home section. Set your home address and choose from 10 custom icons. Once set, tap the home button on the main screen for one-tap directions via Apple Maps.

The app feels warm / my phone gets hot

Motion Bay uses the camera, GPS, and motion sensors simultaneously, which generates heat during extended use. This is normal. The app includes thermal management — for example, the camera captures at 1080p30 to balance quality with thermal efficiency. A car vent mount helps with cooling.

How do I switch between gauge and radar mode?

Tap the mode toggle on screen. Gauge mode shows your instruments (speed, g-force, altitude, and more). Radar mode shows nearby points of interest and businesses on a radar-style display.

System requirements

Motion Bay requires an iPhone running iOS 16 or later.
